Reflecting on the past decade, 20-year-old Alyssa’s mother, Cristi Coleman, marveled at how life has unfolded since she first shared Alyssa’s MFP Success Story when she was only 10 years old. “Our expectations have been exceeded in ways we never could have imagined!” A decade ago, the family simply envisioned what life might become. Now, they stand here, witnessing the incredible progress and stability that has taken shape in Alyssa’s life.

Cristi and her husband, Larry, have embraced their roles as an unshakable team—fully committed and all in. Together, they’ve created a life that supports their daughter Alyssa while navigating their own family’s journey. Larry, now retired from the military, has played a vital role, dedicating 30 to 35 hours a week to Community Living Services and Support, ensuring Alyssa’s needs are met with care and attention.

Alyssa’s transformation is nothing short of astonishing. Once struggling with intense and challenging aspects of her disability, including biting, pulling hair, ripping clothes, selfaggression, and pinching, she has grown into a calmer, more expressive young woman, her bright smiles and meaningful interactions speaking volumes about the way she engages with life.

Alyssa’s longtime Direct Support Professional (DSP), Jennifer, remains a constant presence, offering unwavering support and companionship. From movie outings and bowling to spending full Saturdays together, Jennifer helps Alyssa encounter new experiences. Another DSP, Debbie, has also stepped into Alyssa’s life, and every Tuesday they spend time feeding animals and gardening - activities Alyssa has grown to love.

Life at the lake in the family’s home in Roxboro brings Alyssa joy. Two years ago in June, their family made this move, opening the door to new adventures. During the challenges of COVID, the lake became a refuge, offering solace in uncertain times. They rented boats, spent afternoons by the water, and Alyssa thrived in that environment—her smiles radiating pure happiness.

Alyssa’s mother, Cristi adapted her schedule to work part-time so that her family’s needs are prioritized. Meanwhile, Larry continues to be deeply involved, handling services that keep their home running smoothly. They have relied on the Innovations Waiver since Alyssa was 10, and although switching to an Employer of Record (EOR) status through Self Directing Innovations Waiver Services requires additional work, Cristi says that it’s worth it for them.

Alyssa’s interests have shifted over the years. Once considered “hyperactive,” she now enjoys quieter moments—flipping through magazines, watching Sesame Street, and cherishing family time. Encouraging her to remain active is essential, and she loves spending time with her cousins as well.

Alyssa's sister Lindsey recently moved to NYC, but frequently comes home for visits with her family and sister. Although Alyssa does not show outward attachments to people, it is very obvious by the smile on her face how happy she is to have her around. Lindsey has already began to discuss with her parents the role she will play in Alyssa's future should they become unable to care for her later in life. Cristi and Larry have thoughtfully created a plan so that Alyssa's life can remain secure and filled with opportunities for choice.

Alyssa’s self-expression shines through more than ever now. Simple preferences—like having her hair in a braid or down, her food choices—become her way of asserting independence. She speaks with her eyes and face, pointing to communicate, expressing herself through movements that carry deep meaning. Her involvement in Reality Ministries further highlights her growth, creating a space where she connects, belongs, and thrives.

Cristi often reflects on how remarkable the journey with Alyssa has been. With Alyssa’s growth, strong family and professional support; her guardianship plan in motion; and her life filled with stability and joy, Cristi marvels at how beautifully everything has come together. It is, truly, an amazing MFP Success Story!
